The Canadian Dramatist

This series provides full-length and in-depth studies of major contemporary playwrights, or of the theatrical movements through which groups of playwrights have emerged, with the aim of promoting informed appreciation of their work. Volume One in the series discusses George Ryga, Canada's first important modern playwright to emerge from the new professional theatre of the 1960s. Theatre Passe Muraille, under the direction of Paul Thompson, became the site of uniquely Canadian forms of collective creation in the 1970s, and is discussed in Volume Two. Volume Three discusses new Canadian women playwrights who, collectively and individually, have become strong theatrical presences since the 1980s.

By documenting productions, using interviews with participants, promptbooks, reviews, scene-designs and photographs -- where these are available -- to reconstruct the staging of selected plays, volumes in the series offer essential background to studying modern Canadian drama. Each fills a gap in theatre history, helps to clarify a playwright's intentions and to illuminate the texts of his or her plays through performance detail. In each case, too, by setting the discussion of the plays in their political or regional context, it becomes possible to define wider issues of nationalism and the creation of a specifically Canadian culture.
