Help With Streaming Media
About Streaming Media
The video and audio sections of the ModernDrama.ca website provide access to streamed media clips served from a Helix Universal Server. ModernDrama.ca provides these clips in three formats -- Quicktime, Windows Media, and Real -- in order to facilitate a positive viewing experience for all Users, regardless of platform or Media Player preference.
Streaming media successfully and smoothly over the Internet depends on many different technologies working together. Your experience may be positively or negatively affected by any of the following:
- Browser preference settings
- Browser and Operating System 'file helper' settings
- Media Player preference settings
- Network, Proxy, and Firewall settings
How We Stream Media to Users
In order to make clips available to a maximum number of Users, on a variety of platforms using a variety of browsers, the Streaming Media material on this website is served via 'metafiles'. These are small text files that, when downloaded, launch the appropriate Media Player and point the Player to the server address where the media clip can be streamed from.
Open or Save? You may receive a dialog box prompting you to save, or open a file with a .ram (Real), .qtl (Quicktime), or .wvx (Windows Media) file extension. If you choose to 'open', your Media Player should launch, and the clip should buffer and load in the Media Player. If you choose to 'save' the file, you will need to locate the file on your desktop (or default download location) and double-click it to launch the player and the media clip. Most Media Players also allow you to choose to automatically launch files with .ram, .qtl, or .wvx file extensions in the default application. If you select this option, you will not be prompted to 'open' or 'save' and the clips will load in the appropriate Media Player automatically.
Further Assistance If you have the latest versions of the relevant Media Players installed, are running a current Operating System, and are unable to view any clips, please email us and we will do our best to help you out.
