Caribbean Carnival, St. Martin, 2001: Traditional Tribal Costuming
Caribana measures itself against a cultural "ideal" imported from the home islands of Toronto immigrants. Many of the costumes, particularly for the female dancers, are a direct "copy". Yet the result is clearly an adaptation, reflecting the very different context of a Northern city in which the Caribbean community is only one among a multicultural mosaic. The difference -- and similarities -- can be measured against selected images from the annual Carnival in St. Martin: a miniaturized version of specifically African and tribal costume; and a close-up of wildly colourful movement in which one of dancers holds a camera, in order to capture his own image as he dances, unselfconsciously merging an icon of modernity with the traditional. However the comparison also makes clear that the Toronto Caribana has taken on a life of its own.
